Award-winning artist Rita Sklar lives and paints in Castro Valley, California. She is a member of the California Watercolor Association, East Bay Women Artists and San Francisco Women Artists.

In my recent work, I am exploring the dimensionality- emotional, perceptive and symbolic- of vanishing species and traditions. The wildlife and people are reverently depicted, using maps in unique ways to convey the importance of place. These paintings signal the fundamental dichotomy of the beauty and value of wildlife and the longing for resolution of that which is threatening them. My paintings reflect a balance between the reality of representational shapes and forms juxtaposed with abstract backgrounds. The addition of maps weaves a distinctive tapestry that adds complexity and texture. My affection for wildlife often reveals, at the same time, the violence and the tenderness of our times. I search for new ways to express the singularity and the diversity of our fragile world.

About the Artist
Rita Sklar’s recent body of works builds on her ongoing exploration of urban and natural life using watercolors and mixed media. “Sklar skillfully juggles organic and geometric forms, transparent and opaque paint - all held together by a basic abstract underlying shape. It is this intricate dance, rendered in strong color and value, which produces her exciting paintings.”

“Bay Area artist Rita Sklar depicts birds in her compelling paintings. By choosing species at risk and emphasizing their beauty, Sklar wants to remind us that the diminishing populations not only are a loss to birders but send an urgent warning about the health of our environment.” Golden Gate Audubon 2010

Rita Sklar is an award-winning artist. Sklar’s works are in private and public collections across the country and in Europe.
